"Primitive Meanderings" is a cumulative Anthology, spanning several decades of songwriting & recordings, and... going into this wasn't an easy task.

With over 80 songs written & recorded (in some fashion) since 1983, I eventually allowed myself to Stop and look back at this path in my life.  I had 'set aside' Lone Wolf Music to pursue other musical possibilities, but always managed to, at least, clean up a track here & there.

Since returning to the  stage in 2011, I've mulled over the possibility of actually taking the time to present this music, performing a song or two in its native 'acoustic' setting.
On Songwriting
With the exception of the initial release Horizons, I tend to write each project / album in a 'Storybook' format, where I create my initial characters, and then thrust them into circumstances beyond their control. This enables me to accomplish several things: create temporary boundaries for topics, ponder / meditate on the feelings & emotions of certain characters, explore my own personal experiences in relation to each character, and form some sort of 'attachment' when creating music for lyrics, or vice-versa.

On occassion, I will write a song that doesn't have anything to do with anything.  I have many of those from my earlier years.  Eventually, even some of those, wind up fitting into the scheme of things, and so I'll just use those in lieu of having to write anything new.
Saving Grace, Saving Face

"Walk with me... I'll walk with you forever
Follow me... I'll follow you forever"
Whispering into my ear
Woman's breath... so soft & clear
Has love arrived to raise my sights up from the grave?

"Share with me... I'll share with you forever
Speak to me... I'll speak to you of all my untried pleasures"
Picturing a thousand years, from the edge of this frontier
Love's arrived to raise my sights up from the grave

Bluffs call... now for the sake of it all
I stand to face a long haul back up from the fall
Saving grace, saving face

"Dream with me... I'll dream with you forever
Follow me... I'll follow you, wherever your heart leads me"
Picturing a thousand years, from the edge of this frontier
Love's arrived to raise my sights up from the grave

Bluffs call... now for the sake of it all
I stand to face a long haul back up from the fall
Saving grace, saving face

American Dreamers

He was an American Dreamer
He kept to himself
He couldn't trust noone, not even himself
He believed in Justice
He believed in Peace
He believed what they told him
He believed he could reach his dreams

He was a model citizen
He knew this wouldn't last
He was an outraged rebel
He was running from his past
He was a restless youth
They labeled him a problem child
He was an American Dreamer
Looking for a world to run wild

She was an American Dreamer
She liked Rock n' Roll
She came to America
When she was only four
She was a high school senior
When she first fell in-love
She was a quiet student
Who drew pretty little turtle doves

She was her mothers only daughter
Her father’s pride & joy
She was learning 'bout Einsten
When she first felt the void
She was somebody’s sister
She was someone’s best friend
She was somebody’s neighnor
She was someone you could always depend on

The Mountain

He climbed the mountain
This very mountain
The same ol' mountain where his father once stood
Looked at the sky above
He said "I'm made of flesh and blood
I heard the calling and I understood"

So many roads… so many signs
Rivers of souls, they dance around in my memory
"Remember me?"

Caught in a bad storm... reelin' from here to there
Bargaining no possessions
Walking the back roads... feelin' the storms cool air
Following no conditions
Look out, it’s my persistent stare

He heard the thunder… the sound of thunder
The very thunder he heard years before
Looked at the road and cried
"I made it here alive
And all I own is this heart of stone"

Where do you go when all that you've known
Is loved and lost?  What rain
Could ever wash away this pain and forsakenness

Caught in a bad storm... reelin' from here to there
Offering no protection
Walking the back roads... feelin' the storms cool air
Offering no forgiveness
Look out, its my persistent stare

On & Off the Horizon

Opening Prayer
From sunrise to sunset... twilight to morn
I seek the rationality to which I'm sworn
From North to South... East to West
All my dreams shall finally be laid to rest

Capturing moments to bear in mind
One day, I will fracture the torrent of trials in my way
Just to look into your eyes... On and Off the Horizon

Seizing the courage to carry-on
One day, we will bask and be nourished
By the wholeness of Grace
When I finally reach your side... On and Off the Horizon

Every step I take may lead me farther from You
Still every wish my heart makes I pray
Brings me closer to You

(Lonesome Prayer)
I don't claim to know more than I aim
Just let me know if she exists
Will she be there beyond the edge of this dream
With wide open arms no Soul could resist?

I'm so tired of feeling lonely... night after night
I want to finally touch the Face that resides in my mind’s eye
I've learned to be still, at times lost the will
So let them bury my heart in these hills at night
if I should die alone

Where this path leads to I'll follow thru
With every ounce of Faith I will survive
Where this road leads thru, I'll brave on thru
With the most hallowed of visions that keeps me alive

Believing the Distance shall free my love
One day, I'll receive from the Distance a momentous fate
When I finally reach your eyes... On and Off the Horizon
Will I finally reach her sights....... On and Off the Horizon
I can see her in my sights........... On and Off the Horizon

(To Be Young) What The Heart Believes

There's something different in the world tonight
Maybe it's the way your beauty mingles with moonlight
Harvesting moments to render what my heart perceives

And at this moment, you are all I see and feel
In the making of a love so beautiful and real
Nothing else matters, except you and what my heart believes

From this day, I will honor
All the trust you place in me
From this day, thru all tomorrows
I will guard the flame that burns inside of me
Just close your eyes and say a prayer
I know I can change, just give me time
From today, I will follow you throughout eternity
Because you know we were meant to be

Nothing will ever change the way I feel for you
Nothing will ever come between this flame and you
Oh, to be young and in-love

From this day, I will honor
All the trust you’ve placed in me
From this day, thru all tomorrows
I will guard this flame that burns inside of me
If I should die, I promise you
Your's shall be the last face I see
Until that day, I will follow
Love to wherever your heart leads me
Because you know we were meant to be
It’s you and me

Nothing will ever change the way I feel for you
Nothing will ever come between this flame and you
Oh, to be young

There's something different in your eyes tonight

Fly Away

Feelin' restless... just waitin' for the sun to rise
Feelin' helpless... just watching your body lying there
Soon, we'll both be movin' on
When all we ever wanted was to belong

Holdin' on... to the same ol' hopeless romantics dream
We loved hard & strong... but who knows where this road will lead
Still, a part of me just wants to stay
Right beside you, every night & day of my life

I won't fly away, I won't fly away without you
I know it's easier said than done, we could just write it off as fun…
   and just walk away
I won't fly away... unless you want me to

Take some time... just to think it over
I'll be right outside... grab some more beer & smokes 'round the corner
And if you're here, we'll celebrate
And if you're not, well, I guess it was just too late for us

And I'll just fly away... i'll just fly away without you
I know it's easier said than done
I'll just ride it off on the run... on the getaway
I won't fly away... unless you want me to

Snap

(from "No Applause" (2004)

Don't ask me how I feel today
Just speak your mind, then be on your way
I've had my share of happier times
I've had my fill of whiskey and wine
There's just no place in this heart for love today

Don't look over my shoulder there's nothing here to see
I don't really care what you think about me
I had my chance, but the well went dry
I took my shots... yeah, I'm still alive
There's just no place in this heart for love today

Sadness and loss has a sort of virtue
I lost sight of all the things that used to get me thru
Now I'm here w/these steps that I can't retrace
So wipe that smile right off your face
There's just no place in this heart for love... today

I've had my fill of whiskey and wine
I've had my share of happier times
There's just no place in this heart for love... today

Rain

A restless heart...  I was born to run
Right from the start on the highways that the Dreamers had begun
Lookin' back,, I could've sworn
These miles I've racked would've left me more than just alone
So far from home

Rain on a fools parade that almost made
The change from a dreamers fate  to another place, but
Life just passes

Well, I've been thru hell and back again
It weren't no thrill, but it was fun doing whatever we wanted to
Now, I've made my bed and I'll be damned
If I'm gonna let anything get between
Me and this bastard's plans... except, who i am

Rain on a fools parade who was almost saved by
The change from a dreamers fate by a lovers gaze, but
Life just passes by
Love just passes by
Love just passes...

Rain on a fools parade that almost gave-in to
The change from a dreamers fate to a worthy grace
I'm talkin' 'bout the Push 'n Pull of it all
Life just passes by
Love just passes by

Driving Back to Rainbow's Bay (2008)

(Demo Track)
Oblivion... you've always seemed like Paradise
But when I get the chance, my friend
All I can say is that there's nothing to think twice

A falling out, there is no simple way
Of holding out forever and a day

Reaching for extremes
Reaching far & wide
Midst the dawning of our earthly schemes
And a stalwart's youthful stride

Another day, another road
Another chance to reclaim what was lost
Another way, another road
Another chance to keep from going crazy
I'm crazy 'bout you girl
And maybe, I'm just madly in love

Driving back to Rainbow's Bay
I tempt the hands of Fate farther than I ever thought I could
Driving back to Rainbow's Bay
I test a faltered Faith farther than I ever thought I would

There's something along the way
There's something I had to say
There's something I had to be

Another day, another road
Another way, another road

Driving back to Rainbow's Bay
I test the hands of Fate farther than I ever thought I could
Driving back to Rainbow's Bay
I tempt the hands of Faith farther than I ever thought I would

Medicine

Here within the barricades
Of flesh and blood, which love made me
Wait until my dying days alone
I feel the wind, I feel her touch
Reaching out, she says
"So much time has gone, and still
your soul believes that love still conquers all?"

Oh the magic that her mystery brings to me
Makes me feel like opening a thousand wayward dreams
Come tomorrow, will her vision rescue me
To take me to the other side of Spring?

Beauty for the dreamers eyes
Who ride against the wind and tides
Searching for a place inside the very Heart of Love
Poetry can never bring
The peace I seek, and so I sing
High atop these hills at night and howl at the moon

Oh, the madness that her mystery brings to me
Makes me feel like opening a thousand wayward dreams
Come tomorrow, will her vision rescue me
To take me to the other side of Spring?

Here within the barricades of flesh and blood...

Tempest

Outside... commotion begins to form
as creature scatter for their shelter from the storm
Outside... an ocean of murky gray engulfs the sky
snickers jeering from the left and from the right as thunder rolls
      among the tolls

W/out a notion... w/out a care
Set in-motion w/just our burdens and a glare
NO FEAR... just pure suspense for all that
Darkness brings I keep my vigilance ...as thunder rolls
   amongst the souls

Walking hollow w/no steps to follow but my own
Fools pray for reason as I embrace this season
Plunging thru obscurity w/out a net
Zero hours naught regret

Fallen Angels bleed the ground
Fallen Angels feed the ground
Fallen Angels seed the ground
Fallen Angels to heed the sound of...

Heart of Sorrow... will I live tomorrow? I don't know
Fools pray for reason, yet I embrace this season
Thumbing thru obscurity w/out a net
Won't you please forget my bitter'd soul
All I wanted was some wonder

To Belong

Souls embark to greet their fate
Through the dark... with little more
Than hope & faith to be strong

His reckless start soon syncopates
To distant drums... leading towards
That sacred place... just beyond

Clashing... reality with the dreams
Of one day enfolding his freedom's wings around her heart
And dancing, just out of reach, worlds apart
She quietly beseeches her Morning Star... "To belong"

Thoughts depart, to mingle with
Each other’s hearts, twinkling midst
Part truth & myth... just beyond

Time moves on, and so shall eyes
That search the dawn for a meaning
Or a blessing in disguise... all along

Grasping thru days, then weeks
Months, then years... composure greets yearning with silent cheers
She's dancing, just out of reach... worlds apart
She quietly beseeches her Morning Star
"I'm holding on"... ohhhh, to belong

Souls embark to greet their fate
Through the dark, with little more
Than hope & faith... "Be still, my heart"

Lonesome Man

Oh Grandfathers, won't you hear my lonesome song
It seems that I've been doin' time
In a world that's judged me wrong
The norther winds are blowin'
And I've crossed so many roads
It seems I'm always going where nobody wants to go

I've tried to be a better man
I've lied to be an honest man
I've fought to be a peaceful man
But why, why a lonesome man?

All the impatience of a restless youth has ebbed
Shadow'd by the grace of love
That leaves my soul just fed
The full moon is arisin'
And the her solemn face returns
I own nothing worth sacrificing
Was there something more to learn?

Oh Grandfathers, won't you hear my lonesome song
It seems that I've been doin' fine
On this path I've walked along
The norther winds are blowin'
And the full moon has returned
I thank you for this time
I shall relish what I've earned
I shall relish what I've learned

As Long As There's Time

As long as there's time
A drifter has hope
As long as there's time
A drifter can cope
With all of the things
That keep passing him by
When all that he knows
Is that his faith never died

When all that he seeks
Is the comfort of a home
Then all he shall find
Is that he's always alone
Mile after mile
He knows she exists
Day after day
It comes down this
There's no room for dreamers
Redemption resides
In the distance between here
And the by and by

As lone as a prayer
In the darkest of nights
As lone as a heart
In the bravest of plights
Somewhere there must
Be a woman who cares
To confide in and trust
I will meet her somewhere
Somewhere out there

Mile after mile
I know she exists
Day after day
It comes down this
There's no room for dreamers
And my redemption resides
In the distance between here
And the by and by

As long as there's time
I know I still have a prayer
For as long as there's time
I know I will meet her somewhere
Somewhere out there

Dreamer's Moon

On a night like tonight
There's no tellin' what a dreamer might do
He might not do anything at all
But just sit here and look at you
Like he's done a hundred times
Because he's still alive
With a question mark burning in his heart

I only miss you
When the moon comes back 'round again
Coming full circle, but unlike this life
This road never seems to end
I guess you can say
My love for you has kept me safe
And on a night like tonight
All I can say
Darlin', can I finally come home?

On a night like tonight
There's nothin' that can keep me from view
Of a lover's moonlight
There's nothin' I wouldn't go thru on a dreamer's moon
Beauty's within reach… and so are you
Darlin', can I finally come home?

(Tom's theme) Distances

The Distance with its wrested trials
The Distance, bringing reconcile
The Distance, bringing tears and smiles,
   be it Years, or Miles
The Distance brings with it... Understanding

Persistence has been a Friend & Foe
Resistance has left me just, yet cold
A Mission forged into the soul... we're keenly bored
Piercing thru our span like a fine thrust sword

(Angels sing...)
"Last leg... journeys end.... turn around and start again!!!
Last leg... journeys end... turn around and start again!!!”

Existence has been our just reward
Assistance?... We're damned to wander lone
A Vision heavenly bestowed... we climb aboard
An Eagle spreads its wings as mine unfold

(Angels sing...)
"Last leg... journeys end... turn around and start again!!!
Last leg... journeys end... turn around and start again!!!”

Ready to Try & Love Again

On a Trailways bus, somewhere outside of Santa Fe
She looked out the window with tears in her eyes
Watching the miles just slippin' away

"I'm ready to try and love again
I'm ready to face this great unknown
I'm willin' to let someone else back in
I'm ready to try and love again"

He was always just sittin' there all alone
Feelin'' so empty inside
He held on all of these years
Since his darlin' childhood sweetheart died

"I'm ready to try and love again
I'm ready to come back and face the light
I ain't willin' to forget what once had been
But I'm willin' to try and love again"

All around & around we go
When our worlds stop, where do we go from there?
Paralyzed by this emptiness to carry on
When giving-up is easier than moving on
Keep me moving on

In my life, I was hypnotized
By the notion I would meet somebody here
Feelin' denied and left behind
I could swear I heard you whisper in my ear

I was only just passin' through
When I first caught sight of you
Picking up pieces to a shattered dream
You were looking for someone too

I'm ready to try and love again
I'm ready to collect my dues and fly
I'm willin' to let someone finally in
I'm ready to fall in-love again

All around & around we go
When our world stops, where do we go from there?
Paralyzed by this emptiness to carry on
When giving-up is easier than moving on

Rattlin' Bones

When I was young, I used to run
Wild & Free like the birds thru the trees
Spent my days wonderin' about Lifes mysteries
Takin' in all my sights could receive

Those days were magical
Just waiting for me to bring
A wide open heart, a curious mind
There from the start I trailed close behind

Then came the rattle
The failures & battles
I was 18 when the road beckoned me
The farther I travelled
The more she unraveled
Beauty in all its undying mystique

Most days were miracles
Its a wonder I ever made it this far
And i'm tellin' you son
After all of these years
Love's been the reason
Thats defined my time here

To the eyes of the world, i am nobody
Just another man with a dream
To the heart of a woman my steps would arrive
Its there it would reside
Now, together we'd climb those mountains & peaks
Watch the sun set and rise
Back then, I made her a promise I swore
I'd keep 'til the day i died

She was a woman with the heart of an angel
Blessed with a spirit they all knew and loved
Some days i miss her, but I know i'll find her again
With the help of faith above

Some days, I hear her voice
Just as if she were right here
She says "Rattlin' Bones, one day you'll be home
Until then, just know, you are never alone"

To the eyes of the world, i ain't nobody
Just another man who believed
To the heart of a woman my life did reside
Until the day she died
Now, I always remember ol' Rattlin' Bones
He was like a father to me
The old man had hope, he had a vision
Until the day he died

To the eyes of the world, he was nobody
Just another man who believed
For the Love of a woman his life did reside
Unto the day he died

Fracaso (intro) / The Sound of Thunder

It's not much of a wonder why you're feeling betrayed
Like a spell you've been under and you suddenly awake
You've been gone so very long, while the rest of us remained
I know the feeling was oh so strong, hard to contain

Just like the sound of thunder
You felt it deep inside
In a world without wonder
You realized what must never be denied

Its not much of a wonder, in fact, i'm glad that you're amazed
Like a spell you've been under and you suddenly awake
We sent you all of our good thoughts to keep you safe, my only son
Now you're back, with your heart set ablaze at the path you almost had to run

It's like the sound of thunder
You felt it deep inside
In a world without wonder
You realized what must never be denied

Its not much of a wonder why you're feeling this way
Its like a spell you've been under from which you awake
I remember my own journey many years before
Caught between the realities but the hills that you see would never let me go

It's like the sound of thunder
I felt it deep inside
In a world without wonder
I realized what must never be denied
You've realized what must never be denied
We've realized what must never be denied

Chance Blues*

words & music by Keith Carradine

(from "No Applause" (2004)

Going to the border
Fast as I can
Everything's cool
If I can just outrun The Man
And there's a good chance of that
Yeah, there's a good chance of that
Oh, the way things look
I'd say there's a good chance of that

Going on a journey
To the other place
You'd better tell the people
There's another man in space
And there's a good chance of that
Yeah, there's a good chance of that
Oh, the way things look
I'd say there's a good chance of that

(Tom's ad-libbing...)
Little sister Sheila
Loaned me two guitars
She said she'd kick my ass
If'n I don't bring 'em back
And there's a good chance of that
Yeah, there's a good chance of that
Oh, the way things look
I'd say there's a good chance of that

Going to the border
Fast as I can
Everything is cool
If I can just outrun The Man
And there's a good chance of that
Yeah, there's a good chance of that
Oh, the way things look
I'd say there's a good chance of that
